UGC Portfolio Tips: Lead Every Sample With Its Hook

Build a UGC portfolio around hooks: open each sample with its first 3 seconds, label the hook type and niche, and add a hook reel brands can skim.

Put the hook of every sample at the top of your UGC portfolio, label it, and keep the full videos one click deeper. A creative strategist hiring for a TikTok campaign starts by checking whether you can open a video so people keep watching. If your page leads with a bio and a grid of full-length videos, they have to play each one to find that out. Lay it out so they can judge your openings in under a minute.

Judge samples by their first seconds

TikTok's creative best practices tell advertisers to introduce the content proposition in the first 3 seconds and to prioritize the hook in the first 6. Hold your own samples to that rule before you pick them. The same page recommends featuring creators and a DIY, not overly polished style that fits in with user-generated content on TikTok. Phone footage of you talking to camera fits that description, so keep the opening frames raw.

Pick samples by hook type

Go through every video you have made, paid or spec, and write down how it opens. Sort them into groups such as:

  • a problem stated in the viewer's words ("My hair dries flat by noon")
  • a result shown before any explanation
  • a direct question to the viewer
  • a reaction or unboxing
  • a comparison between two products

Keep the strongest sample from each group. When a brand finds four different openings on your page, they can trust you to adapt to their brief. If all six of your skincare videos start with "I've tried everything", they will assume you open every video the same way.

If a group is empty, film a spec video for it. Spec work is fine in a portfolio as long as you label it.

Write the hook under each video

Under every sample, type out the opening line and add a short label. A strategist can copy that line straight into a brief or a swipe file without rewatching the clip.

Field Example
Hook line "I stopped buying dry shampoo after this."
Hook type Problem in the viewer's words
On-screen text in the first 3s "No more flat hair"
Niche Haircare
Length 22 seconds
Status Spec, not commissioned

The example row is invented to show the format. Fill yours in from your own videos and keep the wording exactly as spoken.

Typing out your own clips by hand works for a handful of samples. For a longer list, paste your video links into UGC Script to get every spoken word with timestamps. Its Hooks tool quotes the opening line and writes ten variations on it, which gives you starting lines for the spec videos you still need to film.

Cut a hook reel

Edit the first 3 seconds of each sample into a single vertical clip, with a text label on each cut for the hook type and the niche. Keep it under a minute and put it at the top of the portfolio page, above the grid. Export it at 9:16, since TikTok's guidance asks advertisers to orient vertically and keep content inside the UI safe zone. If a brand watches only the reel, they still get a read on your range.

Match the portfolio to the brand you pitch

When you send the portfolio to a specific brand, reorder the samples so the ones closest to their product come first. For a supplement brand, lead with health and routine videos. For a kitchen gadget, lead with demos and comparisons. In the pitch email, point to the sample you think fits their brief best and quote its hook line, so the reader can judge it from the email alone.

Keep it current

Every time you finish a paid video, add its hook line to the table and drop your weakest sample of that hook type. Check your spec work too. If a spec video shows packaging the brand has since replaced, film a new one with the current product.

Try it on a video
